The Ha'atafu village home stay holiday is suited for those travellers looking for the refreshing opportunity to immerse themselves fully in grassroots Tongan culture and experience the gentle pace of daily life in a small pacific island community.
While there is no denying the natural tropical beauty of the village surroundings and beach, this is not 5 star luxury resort accommodation surrounded by other tourists and Western conveniences. This is catered for elsewhere in Tonga and some tourists prefer to combine both experiences on a holiday.
Here you will be hosted in one of the 42 households in the village, selected by village council representative, Melesila Weilert, to best meet your requirements.
Tongan culture takes pride in providing excellent hospitality for invited guests so you can expect to be given the best of what the household and village can offer, taking it as it is.
You will encouraged to get involved in the traditional village activities of planting, harvesting, fishing, cooking and weaving. You will be taught traditional recipes and ways of cooking such as Tongan 'umu (earth oven cooking pit) or open fire cooking of fish, clams or chicken over coconut shells and husks.
